A few years ago, I planted a raspberry bush in my backyard.
I waited to reap the benefits, but summer after summer I got a big, fat nothing growing back there.
Until this year. Not only did I find lush, ripe berries growing this year, but to my delight the bushes spread and I had tons of berries to choose from every day. So the other day I head back there to fill a bucket with berries, and the sprinklers turned on. As I dashed into the empty lot behind our house to avoid the deluge, I inadvertently stumbled upon the raspberry motherlode.
What I thought was a tangle of giant weeds turned out to be a huge field of raspberries – more than my family could ever eat.
So I’ve decided to start a little side business to supplement my shopping habit. At first I considered starting up a roadside stand, but that sounded like too much work for very little reward. Instead, I think I’ll start a U-Pick-Em farm. $10 for all you can stuff into your bucket.
Drawbacks to this plan? There’s a chance I’ll lose a few customers to the coyotes living in the woods, which is never good for business. Also, everyone would have to come with their own hazmat suit (or shower themselves in Off) because of the mutant bugs that reign over the land back there.
I may have to reconsider that roadside stand.
